Design and delivery of system for handling of cryolite material for aluminum smelters Nordural Aluminium Plant in Grundartanga, Iceland.

Period of construction: 2006-2007

Dabster has started cooperation with Nordural Aluminum Plant from the difficult task connected with cryolite transportation.

Cryolite is characterized by high hardness, sharp edges and high abrasion. An additional difficulty was the dimensions and weight diversity of the material provided for collecting and transportation- pieces with a diameter from several mm up to 25 cm and weight from a few hundred grams to several kilograms.

The first contract for collection and transportation of cryolite material from anodes cleaning process (crushing consumed anode) involved developing of technology and executive design, delivery of equipment, installation and commissioning of transportation system with loading of material into the container. Dabster supplied equipment such as scraper conveyors, vibratory feeders, dust filters, loading system for containers . Moreover the scop of the contract included modernization of the existing bucket elevator and silo and connection of the new control system to the local control system NDIA.

The challange of the second carried out contract was to collect cryolite from the cooling conveyor after anode’s crusher. Transport system included also separation of the crushed graphite anodes and passing them into containers.

All deliveries were made in accordance with high standards and Customer requirements in particular with regard to proper protection against corrosion due to the location of the plant directly at the sea side.
